We expected more

There are some nice trains, but not a single one where you can step in. We have been in several railmuseums and this was the first one where this is not possible. Disappointing for our kids...

The paradise of old locomotives

You’ll find them there and you’ll admire them. All those beatiful machines from old times. Steam and diesel locomotives, snowplows, wagons, trolleys and so on.

Interesting museum

The museum is in the old roundhouse, next to the Grenzbahnhof (the railroad station), which sits astride the border between Bavaria and the Czech Republic. The museum is well worth stopping at to see a lot of old trains in a very interesting building. The station itself is shared by both Germany and the Czech Republic, and up until the Cold War it was a very important station on a very important line (I believe it was the line from Munich to Prague). As I understand it, during the Cold War the station was essentially closed down. (The town of Bayerisch Eisenstein was also pretty dead during the Cold War, but now is quite vibrant.) The Bahnhof is not as important as it used to be, but it now handles a number of regional trains.
